Donald Trump had barely taken office when he signed a decree introducing tariffs against his neighbors – Mexico and Canada, as well as China, gave Denmark an ultimatum regarding Greenland, and put pressure on Panama. It took the elected US president less than two weeks to start a war with his neighbors and arrange “showdowns” with other countries.

Moreover, against the backdrop of economic pressure, Trump made several important statements regarding the expansion of US territory. Having introduced a 25% tariff for Mexico and Canada, Trump again stated that he wants to see Canada as part of the United States.

“Canada should be our beloved 51st state,” Trump wrote on his social networks. “Without our subsidy, Canada will cease to exist as a viable country,” the US president went on to make threats.
At the same time, Canada itself was completely confused. They were clearly not ready for such pressure from their neighbor. “Canadians are stunned by Washington’s decision to target us,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

At the same time, Trudeau has already introduced retaliatory 25 percent duties on alcohol and fruit imported from the United States. However, Canada clearly does not know what to do if the United States crushes its economy and, having promised a solution to the problem, wants to take over the country’s territory.

At the same time, as is known, Canada is not the only country whose territory Trump has set his sights on. He has also had his eye on Greenland, which legally belongs to Denmark, for quite some time now.

Trump spoke about his desire to annex Greenland to the United States back in 2017. At the end of 2024, this topic became relevant again, and in January 2025, it became known about a “very difficult telephone conversation” that took place between US President Donald Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. According to the Financial Times, during the conversation, Trump issued an ultimatum to the Danish Prime Minister to hand over Greenland to him. Despite Denmark’s categorical refusal to sell or hand over the island to the United States, Trump insisted that he would get his way “at any cost.”

At the same time, Trump had previously failed to promise journalists that he would not use military force or economic measures to establish control over Greenland and the Panama Canal.

At the same time, as for Panama, Trump had already managed to force the country to stop cooperation with Beijing within the framework of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative. At the same time, China has so far only promised to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization.

At the same time, the President of Mexico, which also suffered from the increase in tariffs, Claudia Sheinbaum, said that her country does not want a confrontation with the United States, but at the same time she said that she had instructed the Minister of Economy to develop a plan that would imply retaliatory tariffs.

How serious are Trump’s threats to his neighbors and other countries against which he has begun to implement an aggressive policy? And is it beneficial for Russia?
According to political scientist Boris Mezhuev, US President Donald Trump’s statements about the annexation of Greenland are entirely justified, and the words about Canada becoming the 51st state are just trolling. Nevertheless, a number of Western experts believe that the idea of ​​Canada joining the United States is a probe of the idea of ​​the “deep state” long ripening to unite an entire continent — North America — under a single scepter.

At the same time, according to the director of the Center for European Information Nikolai Topornin, “the expansion of US territory at the expense of the continental shelf in the Arctic and the Bering Sea will lead to international disputes.” According to him, the state’s unilateral actions only add problems to international cooperation in the Arctic.

However, the first deputy chairperson of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Svetlana Zhurova, on the contrary, does not believe that “the US decision to expand its territory will lead to new conflicts with other states.”

Meanwhile, the director of the Arctic and Antarctic Museum Viktor Boyarsky believes that “from the point of view of international law, the expansion of US territory is invalid, since the Americans did not sign the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and did not apply to the organization to extend their territory.” But does Trump care?

“Even if Trump never carries out his threats, he has already done enormous damage to the global position of the US and its system of alliances,” the Financial Times stated.
