With the coronavirus spreading and an outbreak in the U.S. likely, Americans are stocking up on cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer just like they do with milk and bread before a snowstorm. Third-party sellers on Amazon have hiked up their prices to ridiculous levels.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is telling Americans to prepare for the spread of the virus, known as COVID-19. For some, that means stocking up on medications, planning for possible stay-at-home situations and practicing social distancing. But for everyone, it means practicing basic hygiene, like washing your hands.
But you don’t always have access to a sink and running water. In that case, you should use hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol. Make sure you use a dollop about the size of a quarter and rub it all over the front and back of your hands until they are dry.
If your store shelves are empty and you don’t have a ready supply on hand, fortunately it’s simple to make your own hand sanitizer.
How to make homemade hand sanitizer:
YIELD 4 OUNCES.Arm yourself with this softly-scented natural homemade hand sanitizer.
Ingredients:
-
5-10 drops lavender essential oil (where to buy 100% pure lavender EO)
-
30 drops tea tree essential oil (find 100% pure tea tree EO here)
-
3 ounces high-proof vodka (we use Everclear), or rubbing alcohol can be substituted
-
1 ounce pure aloe vera gel (where to buy 100% pure aloe vera gel)
-
¼ teaspoon Vitamin E oil (helps soften hands!)
Instructions:
1.Add essential oils and Vitamin E oil to a small glass bowl or container and swirl to mix.
2.Add alcohol to the oils and swirl again.
3.Combine this mixture with the aloe vera gel and mix well.
4.Shake gently before each use. (Sanitizer should last several months with the addition of Vitamin E and alcohol to help preserve.)
Transfer hand sanitizer to small, clean squirt bottles. Also, use colored bottles like this so the essential oils in the recipe are not exposed to light. Finally, this recipe is perfect for throwing into a purse or a backpack!
Notes
To make a hand sanitizer spray, simply use witch hazel instead of aloe vera gel in this recipe.
